VOLUNTEERS

We can’t thank you enough for helping out last year -from ” timing poolside, coordinating meets; planning parties for swim groups and for the tireless hours you
spend helping your swimmer achieve their goals.

.

Announcer:

Only for Home meets.  The announcer's job is to announce upcoming events and heats, any records broken during the meet, to provide team-score updates, and any other important announcements.

Starter Assistant:

Keeps track of events and heats for the Starter (during home meets) by crossing off completed heats on the starter heat sheet.  Assists the Starter as requested.

Bullpen:

This is the holding area for swimmers.  You will organize swimmers for their assigned races and heats according to the "heat-sheet" and send them to the block area in time for their races. It is not the job of the bullpen to search for swimmers missing from the bullpen.

Lane Director:

Use the "heat sheet" to help swimmers get in the correct lane and heat at the block. Especially help the young swimmers get up on the block for their race. One lane director per team-lane is required.

Timer:

Three timers are required per lane. All timers start their watches on the flash of the starting system strobe and stop their watches when the swimmer in their lane touches the wall. One of the timers will record all three times on the lane timing sheet. After timing sheets are completed runners will collect them. Timers should verify the swimmers name either before or after their race. The team will provide stopwatches. Timers may be instructed by the officials to write DQ for on the timing sheet if the swimmer in their lane is disqualified. If a timer in your lane doesn't get their watch started for some reason, they should yell for the back-up timer to get the time of the swimmer in your lane.

All timers including those who are planning to split the timing duties, must report for the timers meeting before the meet starts. The officials will provide additional instructions on timing and how the meet will be run.

Back-up Timer:

Back-up timers start their watches for every race. The back-up timer should quickly go to the lane where  the regular timer is calling for a backup and stop their watch when the swimmer touches the wall & report the time to the timer that is recording the times.  Also, they relieve timers who need a brief break.

Runner:

The runner's job is to collect the timesheets after each even numbered event, then turn them into the time sheet judges.  It is very important that you collect from each lane.

This is a good place to see the meet and is a good job for a new parent.

Time Sheet Judge:

The time sheet judge gets the time sheets from the runners, sorts the sheets by the event number, and checks that the middle time has been circled.

Computer Entry:

Enter the times into the computer & print stickers for the awards.

Time Entry Checker:

The time entry checker receives a computer printout from the computer room and checks that all times have been entered correctly.  You check the actual time sheets against the computer printout, then inform computer entry person if any changes need to be made.

Awards:

As the award stickers are printed by the computer people, the award people place the stickers on the correct ribbons and file in swimmers folder.  Many times this is done the next day.

Hospitality:

Only for Home meets.  The hospitality workers serve water to all meet workers during the meet and are responsible for picking up trash throughout the meet.  This job is very important, especially on hot days!

Substitute:

You will be required to check in with the volunteer coordinators at the beginning of the meet.  You will help volunteers as needed.  You must be flexible, as you may have to work any position needed.

For Dive Meets

Announcer:

Announces diving order before each event.  Announces the dive and degree of difficulty (DD) for each diver.  Announces the judges' awards after each dive.  Announces "Incomplete Dive" for all dives ruled to be incomplete by Diving Referee.  Announces results of each event upon its completion.

Hospitality:

Only for Home meets.  The hospitality workers serve water to all meet workers during the meet and are responsible for picking up trash throughout the meet.  This job is very important, especially on hot days!

Judge:

Watch each dive and award a score between 0 and 10, inclusive.  Deduct from one of three points from the Judge's award if the hands are not over the head on a head first entry or if the hands are not held at the side close to the body on a feet first entry.

Dive Referee:

Watch each dive and award a score between 0 and 10, inclusive.  Declare any dive to be an "Incomplete Dive" if it over/under rotates by 1/2 somersault or over/under twists by more than 90 degrees.  Declare any dive to be an "Incomplete Dive" if the diver commits more than one balk.  Declare a "balk" any time a diver makes an obvious attempt to start a dive but then stops.  After the dive has been completed, instruct the Announcer to deduct 2 points from each Diving Judges award as the awards are announced.

Score Recorder:

Record on the diving sheet each of the Diving Judges awards.  If five diving judges are used, cross out the highest and lowest scores.  Hand the diving sheet to the Score Calculator.

Score Calculator:

Add the three judges' awards and enter the total on the diving sheet.  Multiply the total of the judges' award by the degree of difficulty (DD) and write the results on the diving sheet.  Compute the running total and write the result on the diving sheet.  accumulate the diving sheets and hand them to the Announcer at the beginning of each round of dives.

Awards/Ribbon Writer:

Write each diver's name, team affiliation and total score on the back of the ribbon corresponding to that diver's place of finish.  compute the team scores fro each event and post it to the team score sheet.  Scoring should be first place - 5 points, second place - 3 points and third place - 1 point.  No team may "sweep" an event.  If one team places first through third in an event, the pints for third place should be awarded to the other team, if they had a diver competing in the event.  Otherwise, neither team should be awarded the point for third place.
